Massive confusion over bike frame size

I'm 5'5 with a 31 inch inseam, so my ideal bike frame size is 54cm. However, bikesdirect says that a 5'5 rider should purchase a 46cm frame, which seems way too tiny for me. Should I go with my math, or there's?

This is the bike in question: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/mercier/galaxy_al_xi_sc1.htm

See: http://sheldonbrown.com/frame-sizing.html

Alternatively, and preferably, go to your local bike shop, have them fit you properly, test ride some bikes, and buy the one that feels the best (clarifying note: this will not be online).

And because I had to click on the link: Bikesdirect is absolutely full of shit with its price comparison. A $730 MSRP Trek road bike, the least expensive they make, has wildly superior every component and frame. Part of that price is also assembly, which my old shop would charge ~$100 for if you brought in the Mercier as Bikesdirect suggests. So, you know. You get what you pay for. Just because Bikesdirect claims that bike has a "list price" of $695 doesn't mean that it would actually sell anywhere near that price in a bike shop. Hell, if the *wholesale* was $250 it wouldn't go for $700 - closer to $350 at industry standard markup (see also: bicycleretailer.com's "So you want to run a bike store" section).

tl:dr - Bikesdirect claims its bikes are worth way more than they are. See also: false advertising.

Umm, I would not buy a cheap disassembled bike from these guys. I'd suggest going to a local bike shop and talking to a human.
